Official multiplayer overviewMultiplayer opens with the full game on October 23. Check your platform’s local unlock time, finish installation, then head to Multiplayer from Call of Duty.
Use the platform account that owns Modern Warfare 4, and sign in to the linked Activision account. Check your console’s online multiplayer subscription requirements.
Update Call of Duty and select the MW4 Multiplayer content in the game’s installation manager. A campaign or DMZ installation alone does not mean Multiplayer is installed.
Jump into Team Deathmatch to learn movement and sightlines, or Domination if you prefer clear objectives. Use a default loadout until Create-a-Class opens at player level 4.
There is no separate Multiplayer early-access period ahead of the October 23 full launch. Campaign Early Access (October 16) and DMZ Early Access (October 20, PT) are separate. The earlier preorder Multiplayer Beta was a different event.

Capture and hold flags. Defend a useful pair of positions before pushing into the next lane.
Fight over a capture zone that rotates between locations. Rotate early and cover teammates on the point.
Collect enemy tags to score and recover friendly tags to deny points. Control the pickup, not just the elimination.
Attack or defend bomb sites with no respawns during the round. Slow down, communicate and keep track of surviving players.
Small-team rounds reward quick decisions and map knowledge. Dedicated 2v2 maps sit alongside Kill Block configurations.
Collect cash from eliminated enemies. Carry enough to become a revealed High Value Target; protect yours and hunt the opposing team’s.
Carry, throw or pass the Data Spike toward the enemy Comm Station. Plant it to upload and defend the objective for bonus score.
A 5v5 round-based Search & Destroy variant. Start with $800 and a pistol, buy equipment between rounds, and lose your loadout when eliminated.
Every player competes alone. Learn where you can be seen from and avoid getting caught between fights.
Progress through a sequence of weapons. Keep moving and adapt to the weapon in your hands.
Fight in 32v32 Ground War with infantry and vehicles. Capture Outposts for score and spawn points, then reinforce them to unlock team rewards.
Launch brings 12 Core maps, three Ground War maps, four Gunfight maps and the configurable Kill Block. Match scale matters more than picking a single “best” map.

The outskirts of a French rail terminal, with a wine warehouse and a mechanic’s garage turned covert armory. Clear the transition between open lanes and indoor cover.

Hajin fields, waterways and farm buildings crossed by roads and rail. Long sightlines make covered rotations and awareness of vehicle pushes valuable.

The M4 is another adaptable assault rifle. Pick it when it unlocks if you want to compare handling and recoil with your first class.
Gunny can suggest close-range, balanced or long-range configurations using attachments you have already unlocked. Treat each suggestion as a starting point.
